'I read the game pretty well so...': Steve Smith's first reaction after internet-breaking post on IPL comeback
Steve Smith, the veteran Australian batter who has not played in the Indian Premier League (IPL) since 2021, is set to make a comeback in the 2023 edition of the tournament.
However, there is a twist. Smith, who filled in for Pat Cummins and led Australia to a famous series win over India in its previous white-ball assignment, revealed that he will be joining an exceptional team in India for the upcoming season of the IPL. Former Rajasthan Royals skipper Smith confirmed his participation in the 2023 season of the world's richest T20 league on Monday in a brief video that broke the internet.
During an interview with Star Sports prior to IPL 2023, Steve Smith disclosed that he has become a part of the expert panel for the prestigious cricket tournament. The former Rajasthan Royals skipper, who had filled in as Australia's captain during a white-ball assignment, will be making his debut as a commentator with the official broadcaster for IPL 2023.
Smith expressed his enthusiasm about this new experience and hopes to provide valuable insights to the viewers with his good understanding of the game. "I think I read the game pretty well so hopefully there will be some good insights for all the people watching IPL out there. I’m certainly excited about joining the Star Sports Team and I’m looking forward to this new experience,” Smith said regarding his new role ahead of the IPL 2023 opener.
Fans Go Crazy
The seasoned Australian batsman made his first appearance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) while playing for the now-defunct Pune Warriors. He played his debut IPL game against Mumbai Indians led by Rohit Sharma at the Wankhede Stadium in 2012. Over the years, the 33-year-old has played for various IPL teams, including Kochi Tuskers Kerala, Pune Warriors, Rajasthan Royals, Rising Pune Supergiant, and Delhi Capitals.
Smith has scored a total of 2,485 runs in 103 IPL matches. After being released by the Delhi Capitals, the accomplished batsman was not bought by any team during the IPL 2022 auction. He has not played an IPL game since 2021.
In the opening game of IPL 2023 on Friday, Smith will be seen representing a new team. The defending champions, Gujarat Titans, will begin their title defense against four-time winners Chennai Super Kings (CSK) led by MS Dhoni at the renowned Narendra Modi Stadium.
